Thailand Rules and Regulations — Fines and Laws You Must Know
Thailand is a wonderful and welcoming country — but it does have strict laws. Knowing the rules before you visit will keep you safe, respectful, and out of trouble throughout your stay.
Never Disrespect the Royal Family
Thailand’s lese-majeste laws protect the King and Royal Family very seriously. Any negative comment — online or in person — can result in imprisonment of up to 15 years. Always stand up immediately when the Royal Anthem plays in cinemas or at public events.
Temple Rules — Always Follow These
- Cover your shoulders and knees before entering any temple — always carry a scarf or light wrap in your bag
- Remove shoes before entering all temple buildings
- Women must never touch or hand anything directly to a Buddhist monk
- Never point your feet towards Buddha images, monks, or sacred objects
- Keep your voice low and behave respectfully inside temple grounds at all times
Drug Laws — Extremely Serious
Drug possession or trafficking carries severe penalties in Thailand — including life imprisonment or the death penalty for trafficking. Even recreational marijuana smoked in public can result in a fine of 25,000 THB. Never accept packages from strangers under any circumstances.

| Visa overstay | Fine: 500 THB per day (maximum 20,000 THB), then possible deportation or travel ban |
| Public intoxication | Fine: 500–5,000 THB |
| Vandalism or graffiti | Fine and possible imprisonment |
Beach Rules
- Topless sunbathing is technically illegal in Thailand
- Be very careful with jet ski rentals — damage scams are widely reported in Pattaya and Phuket. AKN Holidays advises against renting from unknown vendors
- Do not collect coral or shells from protected marine areas — this is a criminal offence
